The Charleston Coalition for Kids was founded by major business tycoons such as Anita Zucker, CEO of the InterTech Group, and Sherman Financial Group founder Ben Navarro. It is an organization backed by some well-respected community leaders, but many oppose this coalition and dub it as "dark money". Its goal is to provide a good education to all children, however, this coalition supports the privatization of schools. This year, the coalition is pouring money into the campaigns of 5 Charleston School Board Board candidates: Courtney Waters, Hunter Schimpff, Lauren Herterich, Charles Monteith, and Chris Fraser. Essentially, the wealthy are using their financial influence to elect candidates in education races who support the movement to find alternatives to publicly funded and governed school districts.
